Iquitos: ayahuasca, shamans and wild Amazon

Iquitos is the largest city in the world not reachable by land. It is right into the middle of the Peruvian Amazon. You need to fly there or go by boat. I took the boat.

Iquitos itself is not that good. The Belem and the Bellavista markets are the best in town. But if you want to go wild you will need to book a tour. And you know how I don't like it. One more thing to do in Iquitos is to take the Ayahuasca, an hallucinogens medicine, with a shaman. Plenty of choice.

At the Belem market I spoke to a random guy and arranged a boat trip to go fishing piranhas. That was great!

But I've also booked a tour. We slept one night in the jungle and could choose few activities. We went fishing piranhas, mud bathing, a morning and a night walk through the jungle chasing wild animals. In general, if you can spend more time into the jungle, I'd suggest to stop in Nauta or go to Lagunas, a little town reachable by boat. If you want to go with an agency, the longer you stay into the jungle deeper they will take you.

Around Iquitos there are many beaches too but not touristic at all. Some of them are not easy to reach as you will need to drive or walk through not the nicest of the area you have seen in your life. The Santa Caterina beach is amazing tou.

There also few touristic places where to see rescued animals or a proper zoo. I've skipped that. Went accidentally to a zoo as it was the access to a lagoon with a beach. The place is called Quistochoca. They won't tell you it is a zoo, but it actually is.
