Iquitos: ayahuasca, shamans and wild Amazon

Immagine
Iquitos is the largest city in the world not reachable by land. It is right into the middle of the Peruvian Amazon. You need to fly there or go by boat. I took the boat. Iquitos itself is not that good. The Belem and the Bellavista markets are the best in town. But if you want to go wild you will need to book a tour. And you know how I don't like it. One more thing to do in Iquitos is to take the Ayahuasca, an hallucinogens medicine, with a shaman. Plenty of choice. At the Belem market I spoke to a random guy and arranged a boat trip to go fishing piranhas. That was great! But I've also booked a tour. We slept one night in the jungle and could choose few activities. We went fishing piranhas, mud bathing, a morning and a night walk through the jungle chasing wild animals. In general, if you can spend more time into the jungle, I'd suggest to stop in Nauta or go to Lagunas, a little town reachable by boat. If you want to go with an agency, the longer ...

Tarapoto: waterfalls, jungle and Tierra Mítica

Tarapoto has waterfalls everywhere. Usually close to town, just need a short "collectivo" ride and then walk through the Amazon. I've chosen just three of them. The Ahuashiyacu waterfall is the nearest to the town, the most famous an also the busiest one. I'd not suggest it. No walk, and a lot of people. This one I don't even know the name. It's close to a bizarre castle in Llamas, a little town close to Tarapoto. The caste has been built up by a random Italian guy. Worth to see it. The last one is Carpishuyacu. Been there twice actually. My favourite as there is a massive rock where to jump from, a waterfall and also some natural hotsprings pools. What else you need to enjoy? During my stay in Tarapoto I've discovered a community of people living in the middle of the jungle, working on their happiness with workshops. The founder is a Greek guy but now about 15 people live there. They are literally building up everything fro...

My best days in Bolivia. Lost into the jungle: Bermejo

In Bermejo just ask of Vicente. He is a local authority in terms of wild trekking. He has a camping outside the town, nestled against the Amboro National park. We reached his house following the river but there is a dusty road if you travel by car. In his camping there is no electricity nor internet. The food is just what he has in his garden and what we bought, some pasta and wine. However his garden with carrots, onions, tomatoes and fruits is open to everyone. The place is beautiful but he surprised us asking to go fishing at about midnight. After a wonderful breakfast with the "pescado" 🐟🐟 he showed us one of his path in the jungle. Basically he goes out with a machete and creates his own route. Very wild. At some point we climbed a mountain to reach the top. We were walking on a super small path pasted to the rocks and not watching down. Just like some goats. Super scary. If you have troubles with the highness, this trekking is definitely not for yo...
